A New Beginning for Deep Sky Creations

Deep Sky Creations is becoming an independent game studio. The astronomy is not going anywhere — it is where the name came from, and it stays.

Deep Sky Creations started as a place to put photographs of the night sky. A telescope in a back garden in Michigan, a camera, a lot of cold evenings, and a website to hold what came back. That part is still true, and it is still running.

What has changed is what the studio spends most of its time on.

Deep Sky Creations is a game studio

Games are now the primary work. Not a side project attached to an astronomy site, and not a single title with a page of its own — an independent studio making games, interactive worlds, and experiences shaped by the same curiosity that pointed a telescope at the sky in the first place.

That change is why the website looks different today. The homepage is now the studio’s front door rather than an observing log, the games have their own platform underneath them instead of one hand-built page, and there is a place for the studio to actually say things — which is what you are reading.

The astronomy is not being retired

This is the part worth being clear about, because “studio pivots away from the thing it was known for” is a familiar story and it is not this one.

The astrophotography, the catalogue of deep-sky objects, the orrery, the observing tools and the archival imagery are all still here, still maintained, and now gathered under a hub of their own instead of scattered across a flat navigation bar. Nothing has been deleted. No URL you have bookmarked has moved.

The real universe is not a legacy section of this site. It is the origin of the name, the source of half the material, and the reason a launch simulator on this site runs actual patched-conics physics instead of an animation that looks about right. Two pillars, connected on purpose:

Games — we create worlds. Space — we explore this one.

Starhauler is the first public title

Starhauler is the studio’s first game presented through the new platform: a downloadable space mining RPG where you break apart asteroids, sell what you pull out of them, upgrade the ship, and push further into places that get progressively less forgiving. It is in early access, it is downloadable today through the studio launcher, and it is being actively worked on.

It shipped previously under a different name. The rename is done, the old address forwards to the new one, and every existing link still lands correctly.

There is other work in progress. It will be announced when it is ready and not before — no teaser, no placeholder page, no countdown to an announcement. When something is worth showing, it will appear here.

What happens next

The site is being rebuilt around the new direction in stages, and this is one of the early ones. More of it will change: the astronomy routes will move under their hub, the community will get a proper home, and the studio pages will grow into something more than a signpost.

If you want to follow along, the news feed is where it will be written down.

Explore the Universe. Create the Impossible.
