Ultimate Emulator / Feature guide

Play Your Way

Your controller. Your layout.

Plug in a controller and play — mapping is automatic. When you want something different, change it everywhere, for one system or for a single game, without losing the defaults underneath.

  • Plug in and play
  • Players 1–4
  • Per-system & per-game mapping

01 / Plug in and play

Connect, and it is ready.

Connect a controller by USB or Bluetooth. It appears in Settings → Controllers under Connected Controllers the moment Windows sees it, mapped and ready to play.

  1. Connect it to Windows

Use USB or pair it over Bluetooth. Ultimate Emulator works with Xbox controllers and many other common gamepads that Windows recognizes. Support varies by device.

  2. Open Settings → Controllers

Connected Controllers lists the controllers Ultimate Emulator can see. Controllers can be connected or disconnected at any time.

  3. Test it

Use Test Controller to check that buttons and sticks register. Where the controller supports it, Test Rumble sends a short pulse.

02 / Who is who

Give every player the right controller.

For local multiplayer on one PC, each person needs their own controller assigned to their own player.

  1. Choose a player

In Settings → Controllers, choose Player 1 to Player 4.

  2. Assign a controller

Choose which connected controller is that player's game controller. A player with nothing assigned shows Not assigned.

  3. Check in the game

Start the game's own multiplayer or player-select mode. Available players depend on the game and the system.

03 / Change any control

Remap a button in seconds.

Mapping is automatic, but every control can be changed. Choose the game control you want to change, then press the button you want to use.

  1. Pick a game control

Open Button Mapping and choose Change next to the control you want to move.

  2. Press the new button

When asked, press the control you want to use. If that button is already in use, you can Replace Existing, Swap the two, or Keep Current.

  3. Save, or go back

Choose Save Changes to keep your layout, or Discard to leave it as it was. Use Recommended Mapping returns to the automatic layout.

04 / Layers, not copies

Change it everywhere, for one system, or for one game.

Mapping applies at the level you choose. A more specific level overrides the general one only where it applies, so your everyday layout stays intact.

Mapping applies to

Controller Default
Your layout for this controller everywhere. The starting point for everything else.
Customized for a system
A layout for one system only, such as a different face-button arrangement for one console. Systems also offers Controller Settings for This System.
Customized for this game
A layout for a single game. Set it from the game's own settings when one title plays differently.
Temporary
For this session only. Nothing is saved when you stop playing.

05 / Analog, tuned

Sticks and triggers that feel right.

Sticks & Triggers shows where your stick physically is and what games receive. Adjust each stick's dead zone, sensitivity and response.

Dead Zone
Movement inside the dead zone is ignored. Raise it if a worn stick makes your character drift when you are not touching it.
Sensitivity
How strongly stick movement is passed to the game.
Response
How the game's input grows as you push the stick further.

06 / Control the application

Hotkeys run Ultimate Emulator, not the game.

Hotkeys are separate from game controls. Each action can have a keyboard key and a controller button.

07 / Playing together

Controllers for multiplayer.

On one PC, assign a controller to each player before you start. Online, each person plays with their own controller on their own PC and checks their player assignment before the session begins.

08 / Get back in control

When a controller is not responding.

My controller does not appear.

Check that Windows recognizes it first, then reconnect it by USB or pair it again over Bluetooth. Connected Controllers updates the moment a controller connects. Not every device is supported.

My controller works in menus but not in the game.

Check that it is assigned to the right player in Settings → Controllers. Then check whether a system or game layout overrides your Controller Default.

The second player's controller does nothing.

Assign it to Player 2, then use the game's own player-select or multiplayer option. A second controller does not make a single-player game multiplayer.

My character drifts without me touching the stick.

Open Sticks & Triggers and raise that stick's Dead Zone a little until the resting position falls inside it, then Save Stick Settings.

One game's buttons are different from every other game.

That game probably has its own layout. Open its game settings and use Use Default to return it to your system or controller layout.

My controller disconnected while I was playing.

Reconnect it, or choose another controller for that player. The keyboard keeps working in the meantime.
