02 / More to play
Seven new systems, and a piece of PC history.
Each new system has its own first-party core. Bring your own games and, where a system needs one, a BIOS from hardware you own.
New in this release
- Atari Lynx — needs a BIOS you provide. No save states or rewind. Local ComLynx runs two Lynx consoles on one PC, one controller each, for games that support ComLynx.
- ColecoVision — needs a BIOS you provide. No save states.
- Atari 5200 — needs a BIOS you provide. No save states; bank-switched cartridges and PAL games are not supported.
- Atari 7800 — needs a BIOS you provide. PAL games and games that need the XM expansion are not supported.
- Magnavox Odyssey² — needs a BIOS you provide. The Voice, XROM cartridges and Videopac+ are not supported.
- SG-1000 — 8, 16, 32 and 48 KiB cartridges; no BIOS needed. Save states are not available yet.
- Sega Game Gear — no BIOS needed, and battery saves are kept. No save states. Codemasters cartridges and cartridges that run in Master System mode are not supported. Local Link Cable runs two Game Gears on one PC, one controller each, for games that support the cable.
- PC / MS-DOS
- A bundled MS-DOS 2.0 historical reference environment that starts at the DOS prompt. It is not a game platform: there is no game library, sound, mouse, hard disk or save states.
03 / Compatibility
PlayStation.
Fixed and improved
- Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain reaches its menu, and its opening videos play correctly.
- Thin lines along the right and bottom edges of sprites at 2x and 4x are gone.
- Spider's startup video plays, and the game reaches its menu.
- Bushido Blade 2 no longer stops when Link Mode is selected. Link-cable play itself is still not supported.
- 2x and 4x enhanced resolution run faster. Full speed is not guaranteed.
- General video-decoding and timing accuracy improvements.
04 / Compatibility
Super Nintendo and TurboGrafx-16.
Super Nintendo
- Battery saves on large LoROM cartridges work again — Super Metroid, for example.
- Star Fox, a Super FX game, launches.
- New Reduce Display Flicker option, on by default.
TurboGrafx-16
- Soldier Blade boots.
- Brief unsupported video frames at startup no longer end the session.
05 / Picture
Less sprite flicker, by default.
Reduce Flicker (Sprite Limit) is now on by default for NES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, SG-1000, ColecoVision and TurboGrafx-16.
Good to know
- If you had chosen Original Hardware, your choice is kept.
- It changes the picture only, not how the game plays.
07 / Your own codes
Cheats that are easier to enter.
Improved
- Super Nintendo Pro Action Replay 8-digit codes are recognised.
- Dashes, spaces and invisible characters in pasted codes are cleaned up.
- Several Super Nintendo codes can be entered at once, one per line.
- Errors say why a code was not accepted, with a hint about the expected format.
- The code-format picker can be reached with a controller.
- Enabled cheats are no longer switched off after a code fails to apply.
08 / Finding your games
Library and Systems.
Changed
- The Games list has a FILE column showing each game's file format or container.
- The Systems page is now a table: System, Code, Core, BIOS/Firmware and Status.
- A new application icon.
09 / Staying current
A clearer update dialog.
The update dialog now shows
- Your installed version beside the available one, with highlights and expandable notes.
- Download progress, then Verifying and Installing steps.
- Clearer messages when something goes wrong, and full controller support.
- An Update complete notice after the restart.
10 / Everything else
Online, storage and security.
Online
- Your online name is your Deep Sky username everywhere.
- The Multiplayer page no longer jumps back to the top every 30 seconds.
Settings → Storage
- Change Location now takes effect after a restart, and changes you make after the copy are carried over.
- Nothing is deleted. Your previous location is kept.
- Portable Mode is offered only in the portable edition.
Security
- The .NET runtime is updated to 10.0.13, which includes the SignalR security update.
11 / Honest compatibility
Known limitations in this release.
Before you play
- PlayStation save states from earlier versions cannot be loaded. Memory-card saves are not affected.
- PlayStation compatibility is incomplete, and enhanced resolution uses the software renderer.
- The new systems do not have save states, rewind or online play yet.
- Change Game works within the same system only.
- New in-app text appears in English when another language is selected.
- Workshop, and LAN, direct-IP and online multiplayer, require Premium.
- The tournaments preview is not open for competition.
