Ultimate Emulator / System

Sega Game Gear

Sega's colour handheld, and a link cable on one PC.

RazorSGG plays Game Gear cartridges, keeps their battery saves and needs no firmware. Two players can link two Game Gears on one PC with Local Link Cable. Support is experimental, so some cartridges will not run yet.

01 / Current support

Where Game Gear stands today.

Status describes the core, not every game. Compatibility is always title-dependent.

Experimental
Included with limited coverage.
Core
RazorSGG, a first-party core included with Ultimate Emulator. It is chosen automatically for Game Gear games.
Unrated
No comparable per-core performance rating is claimed.
Release note
No save states. Codemasters and Master System-mode cartridges are not supported.

02 / Your collection

The files it plays.

These are the Game Gear game files RazorSGG opens. Ultimate Emulator does not supply games; add them from your own collection.

03 / Firmware & BIOS

No external firmware required.

RazorSGG is complete on its own. Systems shows Game Gear as Not required: add your games and play.

04 / Input

How it plays in your hands.

Connect a controller and it is mapped automatically. Change the layout for every game, for this system only, or for a single game in Settings → Controllers.

Game Gear in Ultimate Emulator

  • The console's own controls: D-pad, buttons 1 and 2, and Start.

05 / Picture

The original picture, on a modern screen.

Window mode, Fit and Integer Scale, aspect ratio, pixel filtering and effects come from Settings → Graphics, for every system or for one game.

Resolution
Drawn at its original resolution, then scaled to your window with Fit or Integer Scale and your choice of pixel filtering and effects.
Sprite Limit
Reduce Flicker is the default; choose Original Hardware for the console's own limit. A choice of Original Hardware you made earlier is kept. It changes the picture only.
Renderer
Shown for information. The system's built-in engine chooses how it draws, with a safe fallback.

The game's own

In-game saves

  • Battery-backed cartridge saves are kept as one save file per game.

Save states

  • Not available with this core.

Rewind is not integrated with this core.

07 / Play together

Two consoles, one PC.

A system profile does not make a single-player game multiplayer. The game decides how many can play.

On one PC
One player per console. Local Link Cable links a second console on the same PC, free and with no account.
Across PCs
Not available. This system is local only.

Local Link Cable

  • Local Link Cable runs two Game Gears on one PC, side by side in one window, for games that support the cable.
  • Each player needs their own connected controller.
  • Player 1 plays from their own save. Player 2's save is for that session only: it starts from Player 1's and is discarded when the session ends.
  • Free and offline: no account or Premium.

08 / Honest compatibility

What to know before you play.

Current limits of the included core, as of this release.

Known limitations

  • Cartridges that use the Codemasters mapper are not supported yet.
  • Games that run in Master System compatibility mode are not supported yet.
Region
Read from the game, with NTSC timing. There is no manual region choice.
